Media Office’s 'Seven benefits of engaging with the media' workshop

An informal and interactive workshop on how to engage with the media, is available to academic departments. The “Seven benefits of engaging with the media" workshop is presented by the Media Office forming part of the Corporate Communications and Marketing Division.

“The workshop sets out seven benefits of interaction with the media,  together with seven ways in which the Media Office supports academic departments in this engagement," explains Martin Viljoen, Manager: Media.

“The workshop can be adapted to the needs of the specific department to, for example, include a larger component of science communication or the use of social media. Typically, the workshop does not last longer than an hour."

According to Viljoen, research has shown that a good media profile has several benefits for researchers. “One of these is that a person's research profile is built via greater interaction with the media. It is anything but a nuisance!"

By using practical examples of articles, in which SU staff are quoted, as well as via radio and TV inserts, a picture of the media landscape is sketched and a short explanation is given on how colleagues can use the media to increase exposure. In the process, a fear of the media is dispelled.
