Campus Health Services have noticed in increase in the number of patients diagnosed with Rubella (German Measels) during the first semester.
Some more information about Rubella:
- A viral infection, less severe than Measles and lasts 3 – 4 days
- Incubation period: 14 – 21 days
- A maculopapular rash which starts on the face spreading to the trunk, arms and legs.
- It fades as it spreads
Clinical Features:
- Mild rash
- Swollen, tender lymph nodes behind the ears
- In adults small joint arthritis may occur
- Flu-like symptoms
Notes:
- Highly
infectious before rash appears and while rash is present
- For
women infection during the first 6 months of pregnancy may lead to severe
permanent deformities in the baby
Precautions:
- Persons
exposed to Rubella or Measles should be vaccinated
- Vaccinations
are available at Campus Health Services.
