Mentorship for the career development of early career researchers, and the rejuvenation and transformation of our academic staff cohort, remains a strategic priority of SU.
From 2015 onwards, the early research career (ERC) mentorship programme (previously funded through an award from the Andrew W Mellon Foundation) is continued through an alternative source of funding. So far, around 90 early career academic staff members at SU benefitted from this programme and it has made a significant impact on their career development.
The programme includes regular mentee-mentor meetings, a small start-up research grant for mentees, the establishment of research career development plans for mentees, and access to other research skills development opportunities offered by the DRD. There are currently a limited number of places available on the mentorship programme for C1 academic staff members who are finding themselves in the early stages of their career. For further information regarding research mentorship at SU, kindly contact Dr Therina Theron, Senior Director: Research and Innovation (ttheron@sun.ac.za).
