Last week Prof Jimmy Volmink, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, expressed the SU's deep sympathy with Dr Heyns's family, loved ones and friends.
"Dr Heyns's death is a great loss. He was an extremely committed doctor and lecturer who dedicated his life to service and giving help to others. He was an inspiration to his colleagues and our students and will be remembered for his engaging personality, kind smile and humility."
At the time of his death Dr Heyns was the chairperson of the final year medical class education module. He was also closely involved with the training of health care staff in the resuscitation of children, a task that he also executed in the larger community through his involvement in the Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) Certificate.
He fulfilled key roles in the department of Paediatrics and Child Health, serving as the chairperson of the Human Resources Committee and Senator of the Paediatric College Committee of the South African Colleges of Medicine. He was also a member of the Occupational Health and Safety Committees for both the Tygerberg Hospital and the FMHS, a task for which he was excellently equipped.
Dr Heyns was active in outreach activities and served as chair of the Tygerberg Hospital School Board, as well as a board member of Matie Community Service (MCS). He played a key role in the primary health care programme of MCS.
Dr Heyns was a Matie Alumnus and obtained four qualifications from SU, namely and MB ChB in 1977, a Diploma in Community Health in 1988, a Hons BSc in Health Sciences (Epidemiology) in 1990 and an MPhil in Health Sciences Education in 2011.
Dr Heyns is survived by his wife Dalene, his daughter Eldalè and his sons Charl and Daneale.
