After months of planning the SoTL 2014 conference is finally here! We look forward to welcoming all registered participants at the Protea Hotel Stellenbosch (Techno Park) on 28 and 29 October 2014. In addition, pre-conference workshops are offered on 27 October 2014 to participants who specifically registered for these.

Sadly, our original keynote speakers, David Boud and Angela Brew have had to cancel their trip to South Africa at very short notice due to unforeseen circumstances.

We are very pleased to announce though, that we have secured two excellent keynote speakers, in their place. We are immensely grateful to prof Laura Czerniewicz and prof Chrissie Boughey for availing themselves at such short notice.

Africa's first university-accredited (and 100% online) course in science communication, with a focus on science communication challenges in the developing world, is on offer at Stellenbosch University (SU).

Registrations are now open for the course "Science communication: An introduction to theory, best practice and practical skills".

The course, commencing on 19 January 2015, will be presented by the Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) at SU. CREST is the host of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Scientometrics and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (SciSTIP). UKAID and the DRUSSA (Development Research Uptake in Sub-Saharan Africa) Programme supported the development of the course.

This introductory course in science communication is designed for people who work at the interface between science and society – especially those who must make science and research outcomes accessible and relevant to policy makers and public audiences. People who are likely to benefit from the course include research managers and communication staff working at universities, science councils, government departments and statutory bodies, research funding agencies, industry organisations and NGOs, as well as communication and outreach staff of museums, science centres, zoos, aquaria, etc. The course has a specific focus on challenges of science communicators working in developing-world contexts.

This is a fully online course, and will be presented through the web-based learning management system of SU. Successful participation will require four to five hours per week, adding up to 24 – 30 hours over a period of six weeks. Upon successful completion of the course students will receive a certificate of competence from SU.

Course fees: The enrolment fee for the full six-week short course is R4 000 for South African citizens and US$400 for students who are not South African citizens.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a "first-paid-first-served" basis.

Admission requirement: A recognised university bachelor's degree.

Closing date for applications: 30 November 2014.

Please visit http://sun025.sun.ac.za/portal/page/portal/Arts/CREST/postgrad for more information and the link to the online application form.

Safety guidelines for SU personnel

Page Content:

The final exams for 2014 are starting next week and this means the academic year is coming to an end. The campus is quieting down and there is graduallly less movement at campus buildings, which could attract opportunistic criminals. Staff members are therefore reminded to be extra vigilant in the coming weeks.

Tips:

  • Lock your office at all times, even if you intend leaving for just a short while.
  • Don't allow people to enter with you into a building where card access is required. Insist that the person uses his/her own card.
  • Make sure your access card is visible so that colleagues can easily identify you.
  • If you notice someone in a building who looks lost or suspicious, ask if you can help. With the focus on him/her, he/she may prefer to rather leave the building.
  • Report suspicious activity or individuals immediately to Campus Security.
  • Close the windows, especially those on the ground floor, even those fitted with burglar bars. Also remember to switch off lights when leaving a room.
  • Avoid leaving valuable items such as laptops, handbags or cellphones close to or in sight of windows, irrespective of it being open or closed.
  • If you leave a building after-hours, keep your keys handy so you can quickly get into your vehicle if you are threatened or if you spot a suspicious person in the vicinity.
  • If you feel uncertain about your safety when leaving a building after-hours, you're welcome to contact Campus Security (extension 4666) to escort you to your vehicle.
  • Please ensure that outside doors close behind you as you leave the building after the locking mechanism is activated. Doors that take long to shut or not close at all due to a fault provide access to opportunistic criminals. Report faulty doors to Campus Security immediately.
  • Store your campus emergency number on your phone:  Stellenbosch 24-hour emergency number: 021 808-2333 (for emergencies only); and Tygerberg 021 938 9507. For enquiries/reporting of suspicious individuals /requests for a walk-along service, be sure to phone 021 808-4666.

SUN MeDIA App now available

E-books have steadily become more common as readers grow comfortable with the formats and as the technology matures. Even in South Africa, tablets and smartphones have saturated the market to such an extent that most people now have the means to open an e-book in one form or another – even if it is just in their internet browser.

AFRICAN SUN MeDIA has taken advantage of the progress in the market by placing all their e-books in an app store, where the books can be purchased and immediately accessed from the web or with Android and iOS devices. That means their high quality academic and research publications are now available for the majority of tablets and smartphones on the market today, and easily accessible worldwide through any PC connected to the internet.

Most scholarly books have a very specialised market, and SUN MeDIA is always looking for new ways to reach broader audiences while maintaining the quality and integrity of the content. The new e-book distribution platform provides a convenient way to achieve that goal. The web store and accompanying app allows users access to the same book on multiple devices without any of the complications associated with Digital Rights Management (DRM). The move also benefits researchers, who would like to see their work distributed widely and used globally.

Visit http://africansunmedia.snapplify.com to browse through the imPRESSive selection of e-books. SUN MeDIA is continuing its expansion into other e-book markets. The eBooks are also available independently on Nook, through Barnes & Noble's own e-book store at www.barnesandnoble.com.
