This year Stellenbosch University's institutional celebration of Casual Day will focus on an awareness of the physical accessibility of our campus for students and staff with special learning needs and disabilities.
It also speaks to the University's strategic focus on the importance of inclusion for staff and student success. This year the celebration will include a 40-minute "Amazing Access Race" route for 20 staff teams (with 6 members in a team). Each team will complete a predetermined route on campus with a wheelchair, a blindfold and props to impair hearing (for three members of the team).
The idea is to facilitate an experience of the resources and challenges students and staff with disabilities might face on campus. The learning and conversation value will only be meaningful if we can involve a team from each faculty, and if we can mobilise staff to come and support their teams. We therefore request that each faculty or support unit enroll a team of six voluntary participants. The winning teams will also be rewarded with great prizes.
The event will start on Friday 6 September at 12:00 on the "Rooiplein" and all proceedings will be completed by 14:00. The dress up theme for 2013 is "Go Big" and we invite all staff and students to join the traditional best-dressed competition that will take place on the Rooiplein from 12:45. Staff can also buy Boerewors-meal tickets at R35 in support of Huis Horison.
Entry forms can be requested from Michelle Jooste (joostem@sun.ac.za) The deadline for the race entries is Wednesday 28 August. There will be no entry fees but we request that every participant purchase and wear a R10-Casual day sticker at the event.
