The African Doctoral Academy (ADA) offers three new courses this year for three very different and distinct audiences.
The first, Participatory Action Research for Development, is presented by Dr Magdalena Ngaiza (University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) and tailor-made for those delegates working on developing communities and engaging them in their research.
Prof Aslam Fataar, Vice-Dean: Research at the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University(SU), will present Curriculum Knowledge selection and Pedagogical Justice with a focus on graduate research in education policy, sociology of education, curriculum and pedagogy.
Another new course is the Leading a Doctoral Research Project presented by Prof Raymond Desjardins, Program Chair of the Department of Civil, Geological and Mining at Polytechnique Montreal in Canada. The new course is aimed at delegates that are in the earlier phases of their PhD, or who will be doing their research in a group context.
The ADA is also happy to announce that Prof Michael Gibbert (University of Lugano, Switzerland) is returning to teach Publishing from the Case Study and Prof Max Bergman (University of Basel, Switzerland) to teach a course on Mixed Methods, following on the popular Interviewing and Qualitative Data Analysis course. Teaching and Learning in Higher Education,Publishing from the PhD, SPSS, ATLAS ti and TD Research Methods also form part of the programme. There is also the ever popular and hands-on Preparing for the PhD for students, as well as Doctoral Supervision for supervisors.
Doctoral candidates at SU can become much more involved this year with the ADA's new Presenter's Assistantships. The Assistantships are awarded per course and cover class fees. Successful candidates will mostly be asked to assist during contact sessions, with some training sessions beforehand. Not only will a successful candidate attend the course of their choice free of charge, but also pick up on some valuable skills around organising a Pan-African Academic Conference and meet delegates from all over South Africa and Africa.
