After consultation with the Executive Committee of Council Prof Wim de Villiers, Rector and Vice-Chancellor, decided to request the current Chief Executive Officer, Prof Leopoldt van Huyssteen, to postpone his retirement, which would have been at the end of this year, until the end of December 2017. He has agreed to this.
The University currently, and for the foreseeable future, finds itself in the midst of large-scale changes that are also taking place against a complex operational background.
Apart from these complexities, the executive management group of the University will change significantly in the near future. Two new vice-rectors will be appointed soon by the SU Council and, as already mentioned, Prof van Huyssteen is scheduled to retire at the end of 2016.
Furthermore, the process of appointing a successor to the registrar is already under way.
The process of appointing a suitable successor to Prof van Huyssteen will start soon.
As soon as his successor is in place (currently scheduled to be completed by the time of the Council meeting in September 2016) and has commenced duties, a phased process will be followed to hand over the responsibilities of this post to the Chief Operating Officer designate, with a complete handing over by the end of 2017.
"I am convinced that this decision is in the best interest of the University and that it will contribute to ensuring that the daily operations of the University run smoothly," Prof De Villiers said.
