Environmental sustainability is a strategic goal of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS). An important objective of the FMHS Green Committee is to showcase healthcare without harm to the environment and adverse consequences on the burden of disease in South Africa.
The members of the committee have, with the support of key departments at Stellenbosch University, initiated and implemented a number of projects and programmes to promote environmental sustainability on the Tygerberg Campus. Focus areas include leadership, water, energy, food, waste, travel, buildings and biodiversity.
In 2015, the FMHS achieved its target of 80% of waste being sent for recycling and 20% to landfill. Water use on campus was reduced for the first time in 2015, after rising progressively over a period of three years. In 2015, energy use remained 16% less than in 2010 as a result of changes to the efficiency of the heating and cooling systems, hot water equipment, lighting and lifts.
The new residence built on campus has a number of 'green' features. In addition to the 'green' design, grey water and solar voltaic renewal energy systems will be incorporated in the near future.
Biodiversity has been increased through the planting of Cape Flats Sand Fynbos and replacing lawns with water wise indigenous plants. This year the FMHS planted at least 60 trees to mark its 60th anniversary.
Another new development is the creation of fruit and vegetable gardens, which will provide students with healthy organic produce.
