Hamilton Naki was a laboratory assistant to cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard. He is credited with having passed on his surgical skills to thousands of medical students despite not having received a formal medical education.
The Scholarship will be awarded to a clinical specialist or subspecialist for doctoral or post-doctoral research to be conducted in South Africa or abroad.
The scholarship will be awarded for a 3 (three) year period as a salary for full-time doctoral or post-doctoral research work in a chosen field.
The award is available from 1 October 2017.
