Page Content:

According to communication from the Ministry of Health in December 2014, the number of MEASLES cases in the country had increased again since October of that year.

Measles is suspected in a patient of any age who presents with a fever of 38 °C, a generalised rash and any one of the following:

Such patients should report immediately to Campus Health Services (021 808 3496 for Stellenbosch Campus or 021 938 9590 for Tygerberg Campus) for treatment and specimen confirmation (by means of a blood test).

The following measures are advised to prevent measles from spreading:
  • If you have had measles before (confirmed either by a parent or by a blood test), no further action is necessary.
  • If you are unsure whether you have had measles, please visit Campus Health for booster vaccinations.
  • If you have never been vaccinated for measles, please visit Campus Health urgently for a vaccination course.
  • If you are unsure about your measles immune status and you had contact with someone with measles recently, visit Campus Health ASAP for booster      vaccinations – even if you do not have any symptoms yet.
  • If you feel ill or a friend looks ill and the symptoms described above are present, visit Campus Health or send your friend ASAP for treatment and blood testing.
  • If we confirm or suspect that you have measles, you will need to be isolated for at least 5 days from the date of onset of the rash.

Page Content:

The Management and staff of Stellenbosch University have learnt with great sadness of the passing of Prof Cornie Scheffer.

He joined the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at Stellenbosch University as a lecturer in 2003. Since 2010 he was appointed as a full professor and at the time of his death he also was the head of the department.

"It is a huge loss of a colleague, a friend and a lecturer that shared his expertise with his students and colleagues. I would like to extend our deepest sympathy on behalf of the campus community to his wife Zonia, their children and their family," said Prof Leopoldt van Huyssteen, acting Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Prof Hansie Knoetze, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, said that Prof Scheffer had made a valuable contribution to the field of biomedical engineering. He was a leading researcher and biomechanical engineer that developed high technology medical equipment and medical prostheses.

"Our faculty has lost a friend and a colleague, but for the biomedical field his death is an enormous loss of expertise that has improved the quality of life of a variety of patients. He always said that he loved to be part of a solution that improves modern medical care."

A memorial service will take place in the NG Moedergemeente in Stellenbosch on Friday 27 February at 11:00.

Ethics hotline: report irregularities anonymously

Page Content:

Stellenbosch University places a high premium on good corporate governance. In order to comply strictly with this objective, a number of policies have been accepted to protect the integrity of the internal corporate and reporting processes. As an employee compliance with these policies also protects you.

In fact, the University feels so strongly about compliance with the policies, guidelines and procedures in support of ethical practices that an ethics hotline for the reporting of incidents, actions and trends that are not in line with the values of good corporate governance was introduced a number of months ago. Staff and students may use the ethics hotline to report any form of unethical behaviour, including sexual harassment and racial discrimination, anonymously and safely.

The ethics hotline is managed by Deloitte and functions as an independent channel. The University cannot, for example, demand to know the identity of those who report incidents. The number is 0800 20 45 49. The e-mail is sun@ethics-line.comThe contact details of the Ethics Hotline can also be found on the SU home page under the link Contact us.
