Whether you have already signed up for the 2018 Cape Town Cycle Tour, or are still thinking about it, why not do it to raise funds for student bursaries?

We would like to invite all keen cyclists to join Stellenbosch University (SU) Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers, former Springbok cyclist Carinus Lemmer, and chair of Maties Cycling Nicky Giliomee on the starting line and support a worthy cause!

As you might know by now, Maties will be turning 100 in 2018, and we are gearing up to mark this milestone in style. One of the highlights will be riding the Cape Town Cycle Tour on 11 March 2018 as a group of alumni, students, staff and friends of the University.

Help us raise at least R1 million in bursary support with sporting events during our Centenary year. By joining the #Maties100 team, you will be doing your bit to provide opportunities to the next generation of talented Stellenbosch graduates making an impact globally.

Here are three ways in which you can support this cause:

  1. Buy a #Maties100 group entry: Secure your place in the 2018 Cape Town Cycle Tour for R3 000, payable to Stellenbosch University. You will be able to start with our Charity Group ahead of the open groups, PLUS get a limited edition #Maties100 cycling shirt and supporter's T-shirt in your goody bag, and enjoy post-event hospitality. Please follow the instructions below and we will send you a link to sign up.
  2. Or transfer to the #Maties100 group: If you have already registered for the 2018 Cape Town Cycle Tour, you can still join the #Maties100 group by paying the University the difference (R2 460) to make up our R3 000 entry fee. If you have an earlier seeded starting time, you are welcome to stay in that group, or you may want to drop down to ride with our group. Regardless of the group you ride in, you will still get a limited edition #Maties100 cycling shirt and supporter's T-shirt in your goody bag, and access to post-event hospitality. Please follow the instructions below and we will send you a link to transfer.
  3. Or make a donation to #Maties100: There are plenty of riders who are willing and able to take up this challenge, but cannot afford the entry fee. Your donation of R3 000 per rider can get their wheels rolling. If you have someone in mind that you would like to sponsor, let us know. If not, we will make sure someone gets an opportunity with your contribution, and that it is also used for bursary support. Please follow the instructions below.

“Thank you for supporting this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity marking SU's Centenary. Let us go forward together for bursaries," Prof De Villiers said.

= = = = == = = =

INSTRUCTIONS:

Only a limited number of entries are available, and the deadline is set by the organisers. Enquiries may be directed to marvin@sun.ac.za.

  • First let our Alumni Office know that you would like to ride along and/or intend registering for #Maties100 or making a donation by emailing marvin@sun.ac.za by no later than 24 November 2017.
  • Then follow this link to the GivenGain page where you can support this cause. The Alumni Office will automatically receive a notification.
  • You or the person you are sponsoring will then receive a link to register for the Tour or transfer to #Maties100.
  • Once you have done that, let us know your cycling shirt and T-shirt size. Riders will be able to collect their goody bags when they pick up their race number before the Cycle Tour in Cape Town.

Postgraduate engineering position at Postharvest Technology

About our research group

The NRF/DST SARChI Chair in Postharvest Technology Research group functions as part of the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch University.  The core research areas fall under the domains of Postharvest Technology, Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, with consistent generation of peer-reviewed publications and intellectual property.

The lab consists of a team of young, dynamic and enthusiastic researchers. Our main research aim is to contribute towards addressing the Postharvest Loss problem which adds to Food Insecurity in South Africa. We have narrowed the focus to the following research areas: Development of cold-chain technologies, non-destructive quality measurement and control, as well as mapping and reducing postharvest losses along the food chain.

Our unique multidisciplinary approach offers research and development opportunities for postdoctoral fellows, with postgraduate MSc and PhD training at the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of AgriSciences. Upon registration, the postgraduate students agree to comply with the relevant departmental procedures and processes.

The SARChI Postharvest Laboratory is looking for highly motivated postgraduate candidates who are team-players, have a critical mind-set, are willing to learn, and can work accurately and independently to deliver our mission.

Postgraduate study opportunity:

MEng (Research) - Implementation of Next-generation Packaging Systems in High Cube Refrigerated Containers for Efficient Cooling and Improved Volume Usage (two years)

Refrigerated containers are a standardised mode for exporting fruit from South Africa and represent a significant portion of export costs. Previous work has shown that current packaging systems underutilise up to 25% of a container's volume. Furthermore, current packaging systems also ineffectively utilise container airflow distribution systems, resulting in ineffective fruit cooling and inefficient power usage (fuel). The resolution of these two factors (volume utilisation and cooling efficiency) would facilitate significant cost reductions in export.

The student will need to further develop computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models that predict airflow and heat transfer inside a refrigerated container. These will then be used to optimise packaging systems towards more efficient container usage.

Requirements: The research will require a solid background in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer. Sound CFD skills are also preferred, but can be trained within the course.

How to Apply:

Applications are welcome from local and international students. Applicants should indicate their interest and submit a curriculum vitae to tarl@sun.ac.za before 30th November 2017. Students must meet the admission requirements of Stellenbosch University. Bursaries will be made available to eligible students throughout the duration of their degree.

For more information please contact:

Emotion regulation in Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder)

Page Content:

This is a project in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters Research (Psychology) at Stellenbosch University.

Trichotillomania (hair-pulling disorder, or TTM) is a psychiatric disorder characterized by pulling hair from one or more body areas, resulting in hair loss, distress and even functional impairment.  Some have argued that hair-pulling serves an emotion regulation function (e.g. serving a stimulatory function when the individual is under-stimulated or bored, and a soothing function when over-stimulated or upset). There also is evidence of a link between TTM and trauma. This project thus aims to further investigate the phenomenon of emotional regulation and its link with stress and trauma in people with TTM.

We are looking for people with TTM to take part. At the moment we are also recruiting healthy controls for comparison purposes.

If you are interested, your participation will include an interview with a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist, and referral for treatment, if indicated. Your participation is confidential and you can withdraw at any time.

To make an appointment or for more information, please contact Ms Salome Demetriou (email: 17506549@sun.ac.za; phone: 0764042055) or the principal investigator, Prof Christine Lochner (email: cl2@sun.ac.za;  phone: 021 9389179).

Leave arrangements for Friday 22 December 2017

The University will be closing at 12:45 on Friday 22 December 2017 and will officially reopen on Tuesday 2 January 2018.

As a result, 22 December will be treated as a half-day. Only employees who will not be attending work in the morning are therefore expected to capture half a day's leave on the system.

Should your planned leave include this date, kindly ensure that 22 December 2017 is entered as a half-day (0,5) on the system. The system automatically calculates all days as full days, so employees are responsible for checking that the correct number of days is entered before forwarding their leave applications for approval.

Continuous leave for the period December 2017 to January 2018

We kindly request line managers to verify the number of leave days before approving any leave transactions, and to ensure that all leave transactions of employees who plan to take continuous leave from December 2017 to January 2018 are approved by 31 December 2017.

Employees who will be taking continuous leave for this period must enter their leave as two separate transactions: one transaction for the planned leave in December 2017, and another for the planned leave in January 2018.

Leave payments in January 2018

Any accruable leave payments in respect of January 2018 (applicable to permanent appointments prior to 31 December 2007) can be entered on the sun-e-HR system in January 2018 only.

The leave payment type is “SUN Accum Leave Encashment JV", which the system will automatically approve. This transaction must be captured on or before 16 January 2018 for payment by the end of January 2018.

Employees who complete a hardcopy application for leave payment must ensure that the form reaches the Human Resources Division before 12 January 2018 so that the leave payment transaction can be processed in time.

Should you have any questions, please contact the Client Service Centre on 021 808 2753 or sun-e-hr@sun.ac.za.

Closing date to load internet quota on student accounts -11 Dec 2017

    $

    Page Content:

STUDENT ACCOUNT: USE OF INTERNET AS FROM 11 DECEMBER 2017

    • Please take note that the option to post a quota on student accounts for the use of the internet will be closed for the year on 11 December 2017 for those students who have not yet reached the annual limit of R1 200.
    • This does not affect students whose internet usage is funded by a departmental cost centre.
    • Students will be able to use the intranet without charge at all times when logging on on campus with a university network sign on.
    • After the closure of the option to post an internet quota to the account from 11 December 2017, the relevant group of students' payment option for internet usage will automatically be converted to “pay as you go" (PAYGO), and posting to student fees accounts will therefore no longer be possible for the period of time starting 11 December 2017 until the date of registration in 2018.

PROCESS FOR PAYMENT OF INTERNET USAGE FOR THE PERIOD FROM CONVERSION TO PAYGO ON 11 DECEMBER 2017 UNTIL THE DATE OF REGISTRATION IN 2018:

After the conversion of the payment option to PAYGO, internet usage can be paid by using one of the following methods:

    1.   Payment at the Cashiers:

           Stellenbosch campus:  Admin A, Mondays – Fridays, 08:00 – 15:30

    Tygerberg campus:  Clinical Building, 1st Floor, Mondays – Fridays, 08:00 – 15:30

USB campus:  Main Building, Carl Cronjé Drive, Bellville, Mondays – Fridays, 08:30 – 12:45 and 13:45 – 15:30

    2.   Credit card payment via MY.SUN, provided that it is attempted from an alternative network, independent of the SU server, e. g. from a cell phone.

All students, including postgraduate students, use the MY.SUN web page for Undergraduate students:

    • At web page http://www.sun.ac.za/english , select “Students"
    • Select MY.SUN
    • Select “Undergraduate"
    • Select “Finances"
    • Select “Credit Card payments"
    • A screen verifying the user's credentials appears; log on with your unique sign on and password.
    • Follow the steps as requested:  indicate the amount you would like to pay for PAYGO internet usage; also, that it is in aid of Internet usage, and follow the rest of the steps as requested.

These two PAYGO payment options are valid until registration by the student in 2018, but can also become the preferred option of payment after registration for the rest of the year.

PROCESS FOR PAYMENT OF INTERNET USAGE AFTER THE DATE OF REGISTRATION IN 2018:

From the date of registration in 2018, credits for internet fees can, apart from keeping up the PAYGO option, again be loaded by means of a quota (similar to the process used for printing credits), and posted to the student fees account.

All registered students who are allowed to have fees for internet usage posted to their student fees accounts, load a quota as follows:

    • Select Load Internet Money from Student Account
    • Load an internet quota in an available quota amount, e. g. R100, R200, R400, etc.

NB:  In 2018, the limit of R1200 per year will still apply regarding maximum fees for internet usage per quota to be posted to the student fees account.  Once the limit is reached, payment will only be possible by PAYGO, and one of the payment options as explained under points 1. and 2. above will then have to be used.
    • An amount for internet usage will be posted to the student fees account in accordance with the amount in quota that was requested.
    • When the quota is depleted, it can be replenished, subject to the limit above.

Exception to the payment of fees for internet usage per quota at Useradm:

The following programmes are marked to enforce payment by PAYGO only; students registered for these programmes in 2018 will still have to pay using either of the processes explained under points 1. and 2. above:

    Spec Stud in Arts (AFF)(FS)

Sustainability Message: Water saving on Tygeberg Campus

    $

    Page Content:

The Faculty and Facilities Management presented its drought response plan on 1 December 2017. They shared the following:

As an institution we need to show a water saving of 20% compared to last year.

This can be approached in three ways: 1) by rationing water through lowering pressure on taps or sporadic supply, 2) by retrofitting showers, taps, toilets and finding and plugging leaks, and 3) by evaluating alternative water sources like boreholes.

The process to find alternative sources is already underway. We are currently drilling a borehole on the side of the sports fields and plans are in place to capture storm and rain water.

We are also investigating the option of retrofitting the plumbing to capture greywater from the wash-basins and showers and use it to flush the toilets. The showers and taps that can be refitted with aerators and water saving heads, will be refitted and one litre displacement bags have been installed in the toilet cisterns. Waterless urinals are also being installed.  With the campus meter replacement programme, all water meters are being replaced with new, electronic ones which updates every 15 minutes with easy access to monitor our usage daily per building.

We are responsible for adjusting our behaviour to reduce consumption. Reduce shower times, use hand sanitiser instead of soap and water, flush only when necessary, and see what you can change in your working environment and start implementing it with your colleagues. Do your part.

Be cyberaware during the holiday period

    Page Content:

The time has come for everyone to take a well-deserved break and spend time with friends and family. From 22 December until 2 January Information Technology offices will be closed and no user support will be provided.

However, just because we're on holiday it doesn't mean fraudsters, opportunists and cybercriminals will also take a break. On the contrary, this is the ideal time for them to scam you out of your hard-earned money.

We'd like to remind you to be especially vigilant over the holiday season by following these guidelines when receiving emails or conducting online transactions:

    • We will never ask for your username and password. Don't divulge your username and/or password if being asked via email. By doing this, you are giving someone access to all your confidential SU information, including salary details.
    • Do not click on any attachments, even if the address is a sun email address. If you are unsure, contact the person first to confirm.
    • Do not click on a website address given in an email. Rather go to your browser and type the correct address in the address bar.
    • Never conduct any transactions on a public, unprotected WiFi connection.
    • If you are unsure of the legitimacy of an email, contact the institution or person it was sent from directly by phone to confirm.

For further assistance email help@sun.ac.za or call our Service Desk at 808 4367. More information on cybersecurity can be found on our blog and Twitter account.
